The first lamp we made at KOLEKTO has a quote written in light. It says:
There is a crack in everything, thats how the light gets in.
This sentence is taken from a song from one of our favorite poets, Leonard Cohen, and it poetically refers to the flaws that make us unique and therefore beautiful. The sentence is part literal and part metaphorical. Literally light gets in through cracks. Metaphorically, it is the cracks or flaws that make beauty even more beautiful. It is a recurring theme in Leonard Cohens songs that he doesn't like things to be too perfect - too pat.
He seems to have a distrust for things that superficially look too good to be true. This sentence fits to our design philosophy, that it is through the marks and traces of handcrafted design the beauty and uniqueness shows.
Leonard Cohen was a songwriter whos most famous songs traveled from obscurity to become a global hymn for the modern age. Cohen's recording career transcended generations, ignored trends, obsessed over spirituality and sexuality and remained vibrant well into his elderly years. His songs captured longing, loss, lust, beauty and whatever other emotions are contained in the poetic approach to life. Leonard Cohen’s works remain timely. He would always be able to be so precise and poetic in his choices of words.
Despite his lofty status, Cohen remained humble. He lived in a modest home and lived very simply. This humbleness shows in his songs, sometimes mixed with a perfect sense of humor. At a concert in Copenhagen I remember a comment he made, which captures this attitude to life : “It’s a long time since I’ve stood up on the stage,” he said. “It’s about 14 or 15 years. I was 60 years old at the time, just a kid with a crazy dream. Since then I’ve taken a lot of Prozac, Paxil, Welbutrin, Effexor, Ritalin, Focalin. I also turned to a rigorous and profound study of the religions and the philosophies, but cheerfulness kept breaking through.”
Cohen sacrificed everything for his art. He worked and worked to get every sentence right. That shows in his writing. And that’s why it’s classic. It’s like a Shakespeare play — you get something different out of it every time you listen to a lyric or sing his songs.
When you go through the lyrics of Leonard Cohens song, every single sentence can stand alone as a poem. Here are some of the different sentences and longer pieces of lyrics we have picked out for poetic inspiration.
"I needed so much to have nothing to touch I've always been greedy that way"
“If you want a boxer – I will step into the ring for you”
“How can I begin anything new with all of yesterday in me?”
“If you don’t become the ocean, you’ll be seasick every day.”
“Reality is one of the possibilities I cannot afford to ignore.”
“First of all nothing will happen and a little later, nothing will happen again.”
“Act the way you’d like to be and soon you’ll be the way you act.”
